It was strangely fitting that Blake Snell came away from his best game wearing a Giants uniform empty-handed, in a season that has been nowhere near what was anticipated of him.
Reminiscent of the pitcher who has won two Cy Young Awards, Snell was in outstanding form on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, leading the Giants to a 3-2 victory in their last game before the All-Star break. Snell even pitched into the seventh inning of the game.
He gave up a single to Manuel Margot to start the seventh inning, which was his only hit. Immediately forcing a 6-4-3 double play, Snell ended the inning by getting Brooks Lee to strike out swinging.
Snell's 80-pitch masterwork was his finest of the year so far, and it might be a hint that things are starting to get better for him.
"Well, things are improving. I discovered several aspects of my delivery that I enjoyed today and will keep doing so. Satisfied with that, Snell said in the Giants' Oracle Park clubhouse. "I was satisfied with several of the sequences, but there were a few that I could have performed better. but all in all, content and feeling well.
Before Sunday, Snell and the Giants had little to be happy about.
The NL Cy Young Award winner, who entered the game with an absurd 7.85 ERA, had just once completed five innings in his previous seven starts.
Prior to reliever Camilo Doval's meltdown in the ninth inning, Snell appeared to be headed for his first victory with the Giants.
"It was an excellent one. How could it improve significantly? Manager of the Giants Bob Melvin remarked. "There wasn't really any physical touch at all. It was even a soft base hit for Margot. However, it was evident right away that his mechanics were flawless. All of his pitches were effective, and when Blake Snell is healthy, that's what you get.
"He was a little inconsistent early in the season due to injuries and other issues, but he's really found his groove now and is feeling secure. I thought the performance was amazing.
That gives Snell two consecutive strong starts. After pitching five scoreless innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, he played against the Twins.
Snell's ERA decreased from 9.51 to 6.31 throughout that period.
"He throws a great pitch. Right now, it appears that he's truly getting his footing, according to Twins manager Rocco Baldelli. He has a lot of great stuff, so you will occasionally grow. If you're not taking forever, which you can't do, you'll swing at some pitches that are outside of your zone against him. We were prepared to swing the bats, but we also wanted to force him to advance, which he did and does with great toughness.
It will be difficult to hit when one of the league's greatest pitchers is ahead of you. I observed that today. Early in the count, he demonstrated that he could control his pitches. That is what took place.
Watching Snell patrol right field, Mike Yastrzemski—who scored the game-winning run on Sunday—saw a lot of what he was used to seeing.
Yaz remarked, "That's the guy we got to know and we grew to face." "I'm very glad he's feeling good after the last two excursions. It, in my opinion, positions him for a fantastic second half.
Snell said he's feeling more in sync with himself these days and attributes his recent success more to that than anything else. He missed all of spring training while looking for a free agency contract.
Snell stated, "I simply believe that the more you pitch, the more you understand yourself and the better and better you get." "I like how much I've been feeling better, syncing up and repeating the delivery, but these were two nice excursions with good results. Furthermore, my mental state is improving, as is the way I speak and think.
Snell said that he allowed himself to daydream about having the ideal game, but he was okay when it fell short. He believes that the team's overall performance can serve as a foundation for the second half of the season, when the Giants hope to reintroduce starters Robbie Ray and Alex Cobb to the starting lineup.
Snell said, "Very excited, can't wait." It greatly increases our risk and scariness. Simply told, it gives us a great opportunity to qualify for the playoffs.
